2026 AMYA R8 IOM Championship  Regatta (Feb 20-21-22, 2026)

The San Diego Argonauts are delighted to host the 2026 AMYA Region 8 IOM Championship Regatta, taking place February 20, 21, and 22. This premier event will bring together many of the nation’s most accomplished IOM skippers for a weekend of top-tier competition, close racing, and plenty of camaraderie on and off the water. Whether you are chasing a championship or simply enjoying great sailing in a beautiful setting, this regatta promises an outstanding experience for all participants.

This year, the San Diego Argonauts are also pleased to extend a special invitation to skippers sailing “Classic” IOM designs to compete in the Region 8 Championship Regatta. Yachts built in 2010 or earlier are eligible, and the highest-finishing Classic IOM skipper will be specially recognized for their achievement, celebrating both skill and the enduring performance of these timeless designs.

Points Day Results – ODOM’s & Soling 50’s (Jan 10th, 2026)

Perfect San Diego conditions for our first day of Points racing in 2026! Despite the Santa Ana winds that were forecast, we had sunny, 70 degree weather with light to moderate westerly winds.

RD Chris Davidson chose medium courses for the Odom Class which started off the days racing. Chris added a wrinkle to the Rules: The windward and leeward marks were ‘Cold’ (you could touch them, as long as you got around them on the correct side). This resulted in friendlier racing with not a single protest or complaint.

Commodore Emeritus Tom Warren started 2026 with 4 consecutive bullets including a perfectly executed Port Start. Well done, Tom!

The Solings were up next as the breezes became lighter and a bit more shifty. Chris Davidson selected a combination of medium and short courses.

Thanks to Vice Commodore Chris Davidson for setting up the course and running both Classes; and Secretary Gil Jansky for helping with the take-down.

Race Results: LBYC DragonFlite 95 Holiday Invite

29 skippers competed in the first event of the 2026 ‘wrap-around’ season for the DF95 Travelers Trophy. The regatta was sailed off the docks at the Long Beach Yacht Club on Sunday, December 28th, 2025. Competitors were greeted by cloudless skies with temperatures in the mid-60’s. Despite the glorious SoCal weather, skippers faced challenging conditions including variable 0-6 knot breezes, varying currents, wakes from passing yachts and weeeeeeeeds. Racing took place on a windward-leeward course with the start at the leeward end, an outside-in gate at the windward end, an inside-out gate back at the leeward end, back to the windward gate, and a downwind finish at the leeward end. Seven races were sailed with one throw-out.

Congratulations to San Diego Argonaut Jess Atkinson, who successfully navigated the weeds, tides and wakes to top the field and claim his bottle of rum! Thanks to Keith Ives & Company for hosting and running the event!

Points Day Results – Soling 50’s & ODOM’s (Dec 13th, 2025)

What a day, what a day!

Whilst there was wind today, the pond certainly did deliver some testing conditions.

Thank you to Gil, Jess and Chris Staiger for undertaking RD duties for the two classes and a big thanks to all competitors and of course the ‘Peanut Gallery’ for seeing out the season’s racing for these two classes.

Points Day Results – DF95’s & IOM’s (Nov 29th, 2025)

It looks like we are getting into a fall/winter wind pattern here in San Diego. Storms followed by high pressure and off shore flow seem to dominate at this time of the year. Fortunately our pond still provides light onshore wind that keep our yachts moving. (mostly!)

We had a good day of sailing with both classes completing 6 races each. Special thanks to our two ad hoc RD’s, Tom Warren and Kerim Baran. We could not play this game without you! Also thanks to Jess Atkinson, Chris Davidson and Bill Bridge for setting courses and clean-up.

2025 Fun & Fowl Regatta (Nov 22, 2025)

Len Bose and Doc Elliott were trapped in Orange County due to the closure of I-5, so there were 8 competitors for the 2025 Fun & Fowl Regatta. Saturday began drizzly, cold and windless, but a sizeable Peanut Gallery gathered to witness the spectacle.

After a ‘waiting for the wind’ delay, PRO Ben Reeve called the first race; a short course drifter that seemed much longer than it took. After a race or two, a light breeze from the northwest began to fill in a bit and Ben tried some medium courses.

Eventually, the fingery breeze freshened and became almost due west, so Ben ran a Looong course. The temperatures rose and a bit of sunshine peeked through the clouds as the breeze slackened a bit but remained pretty smooth with only minor to moderate shifts.

Tom Warren acted as ‘Head Peanut,’ as well as co-RD and acquired the ‘Fowl’ prizes. Thanks also to Bill Bridge who (as usual) made himself indispensable with the rescue boat and setting marks.

Points Day Results – ODOM’s & Soling 50’s (Nov 8, 2025)

Beautiful ‘Sun Diego’ weather with light variable winds met the Odom Class for November Points racing with RD Ben Reeve:

2nd Place was an EXACT tie between Tom Warren and Kerim Baran. They each had the exact same finishes between them!

The Solings were next with RD Steve Ross:

Tight racing on shorter courses as the winds died led to several lead changes despite the small fleet.

Filippo Busalacchi Soling 50 Masters Regatta Results (Oct 18, 2025) 

The inaugural Filippo Busalacchi Soling 50 Masters Regatta took place on a beautiful fall day, October 18, 2025, at the San Diego Model Boat Pond. The event brought together some of our club’s most experienced and passionate sailors for a day of exciting, highly competitive racing in honor of long-time Argonaut and legend, Filippo Busalacchi.

After a full day of tight competition and shifting pond conditions, Ty Beach delivered a brilliant performance, securing first place with an impressive seven bullets. He was followed by Chris Davidson in second, Gerry Wold in third, David Woodward in fourth, and Filippo Busalacchi himself, rounding out the top five.

A special thanks goes out to Ben Reeves and Tom Warren for capturing beautiful photos of the day and to Steve Ross for recording and sharing videos of the action — both of which you can enjoy below.

Also, a big shout-out to Ben and Jack for their help with scoring and running the event, and to Bob for grilling up what are, without a doubt, the best hot dogs in radio sailing! Thanks as well to Ty Beach and Jack for their assistance with the boat, and to Chris “the man from Oz” Davidson for getting the pond race-ready, setting the gate, and making sure the Bob Dog Grill was fired up and ready to go. And to Jess Atkinson for organizing and running the event.

This event marked the fourth and final Masters Regatta of the year — the closing chapter of our inaugural Masters Series, which celebrates the Legends of the San Diego Argonauts. This time, it was an especially meaningful occasion as we paid tribute to our dear friend and sailor, Filippo.

We look forward to continuing this wonderful tradition in the years to come, honoring the great sailors who have shaped our club and community.

DF95 Nationals at Newport, RI – Results & Race Videos (Oct 16-19, 2025)

The DF95 National Championship drew top remote-control sailors from across the U.S., Barbados, and the U.K. to Newport for three days of highly competitive racing in classic October conditions.

Racing off the Sail Newport Sailing Center in Brenton Cove, the fleet battled through 14 races in steady, building winds, with tight starts and finishes throughout. The regatta came down to an intense duel between brothers Brad and Ken Read, both world-class sailors, with Brad’s consistent, conservative approach on the final day earning him the national title by three points. The event showcased just how serious—and skill-sharpening—RC sailing can be, and left competitors eager to return to Newport for future regattas.

Our friend from Seattle, Dan Shier, did a great job capturing most of the racing on video—all while competing himself.
