Sailing Classes for All Ages

Have you ever wanted to learn how to sail?

The San Diego Argonauts regularly offer free introductory sailing sessions at the beautiful San Diego Model Boat Pond. Our experienced club members enjoy introducing newcomers to the fun and excitement of sailing using radio-controlled sailboats.

The basics can typically be learned in just 10–20 minutes at the pond with one of our teaching members. If you would like to get a head start, feel free to check out the videos at the bottom of this page.

Although our boats are radio-controlled, the principles of sailing are exactly the same as those used on full-size sailboats.

You’ll quickly learn concepts such as:

– Sailing into and across the wind
– Tacking
– Jibing
– Points of sail
– Sail trim
– Wind awareness
– Boat balance
– Basic racing strategy

These are the same skills used by sailors around the world on full-size sailboats. No previous sailing experience is necessary, and all equipment is provided.

We most commonly offer these introductory sailing sessions during our:

– Annual Open House
– Christmas Parade Days
– Community outreach events
– Special public demonstrations

Or simply stop by during one of our regular Wednesday lunchtime sailing sessions. There’s a good chance one of our members will hand you a transmitter and help you learn the basics right on the water!

Whether you’re 8 or 88 years old, sailing is a hobby that combines science, engineering, strategy, and outdoor recreation while providing endless opportunities to learn and have fun.
